SSC Meta-Data System

. -

Introduction

The SSC Meta-data system was designed and initially implemented as part of the HIV and AIDS Patient database project for CDSC. It was designed there so that meta-data could be shared between different databases related to the same underlying research issues, and it was a simple step to extract the system so that it can be implemented into other statistical database projects.

The system is written in MS Access, and the current implementation is highly dependent on that environment. However, the underlying concepts are built on the functionality of the relational model and an understanding of statistical meta-data requirements, so implementations in other host systems are not out of the question.

The following pages are based closely on a paper presented at the 9th Statistical and Scientific Database Management (SSDBM) conference held at Olympia, Washington State, USA in August 1997.
