IT Issues for Statisticians

XML for Data Exchange

This is a brief presentation given at the joint RSS Statistical Computing section and ASC meeting on New Approaches to Software for Statistical Processing, on 21st January 2004. It consists mainly of a presentation of the data structures handled by triple-s and by the StatDataML system implemented in R and S. MSc in Official Statistics at Southampton University 

The Department of Social Statistics at Southampton University runs a modular (2-year part time) MSc in Official Statistics, aimed primarily at staff in the UK Government Statistical Service, but open to others (and with the modules available as separate short courses). Details can be found here on the Southampton site. 

Andrew Westlake organises the module on Statistical Computing, which is designed to provide some insight into the IT issues and choices that relate to official statistics. It is offered every other year, and last ran in the week beginning 16th February 2009. Click here for details of the course content.

IASC Summer School on Knowledge Discovery and Large Surveys

For some time the IASC has organised a Summer School in years when there is not a Compstat meeting. In June 2001 Andrew Westlake gave a presentation on IT Issues for Large Surveys (drawing on a subset of material from the Southampton module), and the presentation is available for viewing here Click to view (PowerPoint, 1.9Mb).
